A drawing for the 8 Man Tournament took place on Monday, March 20th. It was preformed by a referee official Kevin McDonald in the presence of WFL President Zack Tesler and matchmaker Mario Ramos, and was covered and taped by MassMMA.NET.

1. 8-Man Tournament: Quarterfinals. Adam Comfort (Ithaca MMA) vs. Joe “J-Lau” Lauzon (Team Aggression)

Round 1: Both men touch gloves to start the fight. Comfort starts out by throwing two punching combinations and missing both, but follows up with a leg kick. Comfort punches his way into a clinch, where he gets a takedown into Joe’s butterfly guard. Lauzon immediately sweeps to get to the top of Adam’s guard. Adam holds J-Lau in tightly, but Lauzon responds by slamming him twice. Comfort goes for a kimura, but Lauzon defends. Joe starts to pass, but instead drops back for an Achilles lock. Lauzon works to sink it in, and Comfort ends up tapping out.

Winner by submission (Achilles lock) at 1:44 of round 1: Joe Lauzon

2. 8-Man Tournament: Quarterfinals. Peter Jeffrey (Team Santos) vs. Zane Baker (AMMA)

Round 1: They touch gloves. Pete throws a leg kick and they work to a clinch. Zane knees while Peter throws some nice body shots. Jeffrey tries a double leg, but Zane defends and lands a knee as well as a punch upon breaking the clinch. Both throw a leg kick and work back to the clinch. Jeffrey gets a takedown to mount. Zane quickly works his way out and gets back to his feet with Pete sprawled on top. Zane gets out and throws some knees. They trade punches on the feet. Jeffery lands a leg kick, but slips. Zane begins to pound, and Peter gets up to his feet into a clinch. Zane knees to the leg and body while pressing Pete to the corner. Zane gets a takedown, but Pete quickly gets to his feet. Jeffrey lands a right hand while Baker nails some leg kicks. They clinch again, and Baker works Jeffrey to the corner, where he lands some knees to the legs and body as the round ends.

Round 2: The two men circle and both throw some leg kicks before working to a clinch. Baker puts Jeffrey against the ropes. Jeffrey reverses, and they break the clinch. Zane throws a head kick that skims by Pete. Pete lands some hard punches. Zane throws a knee, and Pete goes for a single leg takedown. Zane defends and hits a lateral drop, taking Pete’s back. Baker lands some hard shots and looks for the choke. Pete defends, but Zane eventually locks in the rear naked choke. Pete taps out.

3. 8-Man Tournament: Quarterfinals. Doug Brown (Fight Zone) vs. Hitalo Machado (ATT)

Round 1: Brown throws a leg kick and Hitalo flurries into a clinch. They break, and both unload a barrage of punches. Hitalo knees and clinches Doug against the ropes. Brown tries a leg trip, but Machado defends and knees to the ribs. Doug misses a hook, but presses Machado to the corner. Hitalo reverses, breaks the clinch and throws a flurry of punches. Doug throws a front kick and a leg kick. Machado advances with punches, knocking Brown through the ropes. After the ref lets Brown get back in, both start trading heavy shots. Doug is the first to land, rocking Hitalo. Brown follows up with three more hard shots, knocking Machado out.

Winner by KO at 2:53 of round 1: Doug Brown

4. 8-Man Tournament: Quarterfinals. Leandro “Tatu” Escobar (Best Way Jiu-Jitsu/ATT) vs. Andrew Montanez (Freestyle)

Round 1: They touch gloves and Andrew throws a punch. Both men are tentative while circling. Tatu lands a jab and catches a kick, throwing Montanez through the ropes. The ref stands them up. Montanez misses two combinations. Escobar hits a leg kick and Andrew responds in kind, following with an attempted head kick. Tatu works to the clinch, pushing Montanez to the corner. Montanez knees and Escobar lands body punches. Andrew looks for a throw, misses, and they break the clinch. Both land punches and Montanez throws a head kick. Tatu jabs, Andrew tries a front kick and hits a right. They trade shots and Tatu gets a double leg to side mount. Montanez gets a reverse guard. Escobar punches to the body and Montanez punches upward as the round ends.

Round 2: They touch gloves and circle. Escobar jabs and shoots. Montanez defends and gets to the top of open guard. Andrew throws leg kicks and punches while Leandro thrust kicks to the shin. The ref stands Tatu up. Montanez jabs and Escobar shoots. Montanez defends, but they are in the ropes. The referee tries to move them back to the middle, but they can’t get the position, so both men are stood back up. Montanez throws a combination while Tatu shoots into a kick. Tatu gets a rear waistlock standing, but Montanez turns into the clinch. Escobar knees. They break and Andrew throws a right. Tatu throws a combination, Andrew shoots, and Tatu defends with a guillotine attempt. The ref stops it due to an unintentional knee to the head by Escobar. Montanez is given two minutes to recover. When they restart, Montanez shoots for a single leg. Tatu tries for a kneebar, but Montanez turns out into open guard. The round ends.

The judges rule the fight a draw, and it goes to a two-minute overtime.

Overtime: They touch gloves and Montanez kicks. Both flurry with Tatu connecting. Montanez shoots; Escobar defends and gets to the back. Andrew pulls off a slick reversal and gets on Tatu’s back. Tatu spins out to the bottom of open guard and both men get to their feet. Montanez shoots, Leandro sprawls and throws shots from the top. The ref stands them for inactivity. Andrew kicks, Tatu shoots, and Montanez defends. Tatu looks for a leg lock, and they both try for a leg submission as the round ends.

Winner by split decision: Leandro “Tatu” Escobar

5. Page Sturtevant (AMMA) vs. Katherine Thompson

Round 1: Katherine blazes across the ring, firing punches. Page clinches and Katherine lands some knees from a Thai position. Thompson lands a combination and a knee, and Page clinches again, getting a takedown to half guard. Thompson tries to reverse, but Sturtevant stuffs it and moves to side mount. She gets her shin over Katherine’s arm and begins to pound before transitioning to mount. Thompson holds tightly and Page works the body. Sturtevant gets space and pounds. She gets thrown back to side mount before going back to mount. Again Thompson holds her down and Page works the body before getting space and firing. Page continues to pound and look for an arm bar for the rest of the round, putting Katherine in constant danger of being TKOd. Thompson manages to survive.

Round 2: Katherine comes out with a knee and Page gets a bodylock to half guard. She pounds to the body and passes to mount. Sturtevant gets space and punches. She looks for an Americana, but Thompson defends. Page goes back to punching from the top. She tries again for an Americana but again Thompson defends. Page lets go and punches some more before going for an arm bar. Katherine defends and moves to the bottom of side mount. Page knees to the body before going back to mount and pounding until the end of the round.

Winner by unanimous decision: Page Sturtevant

6. Anthony Peters (Team Russell) vs. Dan “The Upgrade” Lauzon (Team Aggression)

Round 1: They touch gloves. Dan jabs and throws a leg kick. He tries a head kick, but misses. Lauzon nails a right hand. Both flurry into a clinch. Lauzon swings and hits a right hand, getting a knockdown. Lauzon gets sprawled on top of Peters and punches to the body. Anthony looks for a takedown, but Lauzon defends. Anthony gets to his feet, but gets knocked down again. Lauzon is on top in open guard. Peters stands and misses a spinning back kick, but gets a double leg takedown to guard. Dan looks for a triangle, Anthony gets up and out to the top of open guard. Lauzon gets to his feet and throws a head kick. Peters misses a knee and punches. Lauzon answers with a leg kick and an attempted head kick. Lauzon advances, chasing Peters back with punches. Anthony ducks underneath for a takedown and Lauzon spins into an omo plata, nearly finishing as the round ends.

Round 2: They touch gloves. Lauzon hits a right and a combination. Anthony responds in kind. Dan hits a leg kick while Peters tries a hook and misses. Dan misses a front kick and hits a leg kick. Lauzon misses a Superman punch, but flurries and gets a knockdown, taking Peters’s back. Dan flattens him and pounds. Peters turns and looks for a leg lock. Dan defends and goes to side mount. He lands some shots before going to reverse mount. Lauzon gets an ankle lock, forcing Peters to tap out.

Winner by submission (ankle lock) at 2:20 of round 2: Dan Lauzon

7. Erick Russell (Ithaca MMA) vs. Reid Homer (Submission Arsenal)

Round 1: They touch gloves and Erick throws a combination, two jabs, and two leg kicks in succession. Reid swings a right, connects, and jumps up for a guillotine. Erick gets his head out and is on top in Reid’s guard. Homer tries a leg lock, but Russell escapes and they both stand. Russell hits jabs, Reid clinches, but Russell goes behind, kneeing to the stomach. Reid drops and laces around Erick’s leg, going for a heel hook. Erick gets out, but Reid goes for another heel hook. Erick again escapes, gets on top and starts to pound. He gets a modified total hold down and lands some hard shots as the round ends.

Round 2: They touch gloves and Reid hits a leg kick. Erick lands jabs and both try a kick. Erick hits a right hand and jabs. Again, both try a leg kick. Homer catches Russell’s leg and gets a takedown to open guard. As he tries to pass, Russell locks in an arm bar. Homer taps out.

8. Dana Bluen (Team Santos) vs. David Woodby (NY)

Round 1: Both fire hard shots. Bluen rushes in and gets a takedown to side mount, but against the ropes. The ref restarts them in the same position in the center. Dana knees and punches before transitioning to mount. Woodby turns his back and Bluen locks in the rear naked choke. Woodby taps out.

Winner by submission (rear naked choke) at 1:35 of round 1: Dana Bluen

9. Eric Henry (Ithaca MMA) vs. Mark Matheson (Dragon Warrior)

Due to a 25-pound weight discrepancy, the USKBA would not allow this fight to take place. However, both fighters were publicly given credit for being ready to fight.

10. Eddie Felix (Dragon Warrior) vs. Cesario de Souza (Dragon Lair)

Round 1: They circle and Eddie clinches. Cesario pushes him to the ropes. The ref makes them break cleanly, and during the break, Felix head butts de Souza. The referee reprimands Felix and instructs the judges to take a point away from him. They restart the match and Felix punches his way to a clinch. de Souza gets a takedown, but Felix gets up into a clinch. Both punch in the clinch and Eddie gets a takedown to half guard. Felix pounds and during a transition, gets to Cesario’s back, nearly finishing with a rear naked choke. Cesario stands and rolls into Felix’s half guard. Felix gets full guard, holding tightly as de Souza works short shots. Cesario gets space and tries a jumping Sakuraba punch from the top of open guard. The round ends with Cesario in Felix’s tight guard, throwing short shots.

Round 2: Cesario misses a leg kick and Felix works to a clinch. de Souza gets a bodylock takedown to half guard. Cesario locks in an Americana and Felix taps. After the match, Cesario returns the head butt which leads to an altercation. However, both men end up shaking hands in a show of sportsmanship.

Winner by submission (Americana) at :53 of round 2: Cesario de Souza.

11. 8-Man Tournament Semi-finals. Zane Baker (AMMA) vs. Joe Lauzon (Team Aggression)

Round 1: They touch gloves and circle. Lauzon shoots a double leg and gets to side mount. Baker gets up, but Lauzon tries for a rear naked choke, coming very close. Baker rolls out to half guard and looks for a sweep. Lauzon passes to reverse mount and then to side mount before going to full mount. Zane tries for an Achilles lock and Joe responds in kind. Both are caught in a leg lock war. Zane gets to the top of open guard and hits a leg kick. Joe gets up and shoots, but Zane sprawls, coming close with an anaconda choke. Lauzon escapes to guard and both men stand. Zane jabs and Joe throws a combination to the clinch. He nails a bodylock takedown which bounces the back of Baker’s head off of the mat. Baker is out and Joe lands two more punches before the referee ends the fight.

Winner by KO at 3:39 of round 1: Joe Lauzon

12. 8-Man Tournament: Semi-finals. Doug Brown (Fight Zone) vs. Andrew Montanez (Freestyle)

Due to an injury, Leandro “Tatu” Escobar was forced to withdraw from the tournament. His opponent, Andrew Montanez replaced him in the semi-finals.

Round 1: They circle and Brown jabs. Montanez fakes a shot. Brown hits two leg kicks and Montanez gets a single leg takedown to guard before passing to half guard. Brown tries for a kimura and briefly gets on top before Andrew reverses to the top of guard. Andrew pounds and Brown holds him in tightly. Montanez works the body before getting space and flurrying. Brown holds him down again. Both work in the guard. Brown tries for a kimura sweep and Montanez flurries before going back down into a tight guard. The ref stands them up for inactivity. They circle, and Andrew shoots. Doug sprawls, but Montanez finishes the takedown to butterfly guard. Montanez passes to side mount but Brown quickly gets his guard back and tries a kimura sweep. Montanez works the body as the round ends.

Round 2: They circle and Brown tries a head kick. Montanez shoots and gets on top in half guard. Brown tries a sweep and Andrew pounds. Doug gets his guard and holds tightly. Montanez works short shots and again Brown tries the kimura sweep. The ref stands them up. Andrew shoots under punches, but Brown sprawls and punches to the body and face while on top. Montanez finishes the takedown to guard. Both work short shots and Brown tries a kimura before the referee stands them up again. With ten seconds left, Montanez pulls open guard. Brown kicks to the legs as the bell sounds.

The judges rule this match a draw and it goes to a two-minute overtime.

Overtime: They touch gloves and circle. Doug jabs, Montanez shoots and gets a takedown through the ropes. The referee stands them back up. They circle, Montanez shoots into a kick and is knocked out. Brown lands a few punches until the ref stops the fight.

Winner by KO (kick) in :58 of the overtime: Doug Brown

13. Matt Keating (Team Unleashed) vs. Bobby McAndrews (Dragon Lair)

Round 1: Keating shoots, McAndrews defends to a clinch. They break and Matt hits a leg kick as Bobby misses a combination. Keating again shoots and they work to a clinch. Bobby holds the ropes to defend the takedown. They break and Keating throws a front kick. McAndrews misses a combination. Matt shoots. McAndrews tries a guillotine, but Keating finishes the takedown to side mount. McAndrews turns his back and Keating locks in a rear naked choke. Bobby taps out.

Winner by submission (rear naked choke) at 2:05 of round 1: Matt Keating

14. Mike “Dragonfoot” Hansen (BIT) vs. Alex Chianurashvili

Round 1: They touch gloves and Chianurashvili jabs. Hansen throws combinations and they work to a clinch. Alex gets a takedown, but Mike reverses to the top of half guard and passes to side mount. Chianurashvili stands into a clinch and knees. Hansen gets a lateral drop to the top of guard, where he lands some punches. He gets space and stands. Chianurashvili stands. They clinch and break. Hansen kicks and goes to a clinch. Chianurashvili knees and jabs as they break. Alex lands two rights and they go back to a clinch. Chianurashvili goes behind and knees to Hansen’s legs. Alex gets to back mount without hooks in. Hansen stands and tries a kimura, coming close as the bell sounds.

Round 2: Chianurashvili jabs and throws a combination. Mike hits a kick. Alex flurries to a clinch. Hansen tries a lateral drop, Chianurashvili blocks and they stand. Alex lands a combination and jabs. Hansen misses a spinning back fist and they clinch in the corner. The ref breaks them up. Chianurashvili lands a hook, Hansen advances with punches, and Alex returns and gets to a clinch. Mike tries a throw and gives up his back. Alex pounds. Mike stands and tries a kimura. Chianurashvili blocks and gets to back mount. Chianurashvili pounds from there and the ref stops the fight.

Winner by TKO at 3:03 of round 2: Alex Chianurashvili

15. Superfight: Tim “Kanroc” Williams vs. Jorge “El Conquistador” Rivera (Team Elite)

Round 1: They circle and Jorge lands a leg kick, working to the clinch. Tim puts Jorge against the corner, but Rivera reverses. El Conquistador knees and gets a takedown to guard. Jorge pounds and passes to side mount, looking for an arm triangle. He pops up to knee on chest, but they get caught in the ropes. Both men are restarted standing. Rivera misses a head kick, shoots, and gets a takedown to side mount. He lands small punches and knees to the body. Jorge transitions to mount and unloads. The referee soon stops the fight.

Winner by TKO at 3:50 of round 1: Jorge Rivera

16. WFL Heavyweight Title Fight: Erick Yarid (NBA) vs. Roger Brackett (Lakeville MMA/Gracie Barra MA)

Round 1: They touch gloves. Roger lands a hook and works to a clinch, hitting a takedown. Erick gets up and goes for a takedown, but in the process, Brackett locks in a guillotine. Yarid taps out.

Winner by submission (guillotine) at :23 of round 1 and new WFL Heavyweight Champion: Roger Brackett

17. WFL Super Heavyweight Title Fight: Champion Sherman Pendergarst (Baltimore Fight Club) vs. Challenger Jason Cadima (Dragon Lair)

Round 1: They touch gloves. Cadima knees and Pendergarst gets a takedown to guard. Jason holds Sherman’s arms tightly. Pendergarst slams. The ref stands them up. Sherman lands a right hand and a combination into a clinch. He gets a takedown to guard and passes to half guard as Jason tries a kimura. After a minute of inactivity, the referee stands them up. Both come out throwing combinations into a clinch. Jason knees. They break and Sherman lands a right hand before getting a takedown and going to mount. Jason turns his back and the ref pauses the fight to check on Cadima’s bloody nose. After clearing up the blood, Jason is allowed to continue and they restart standing. Sherman lands a combination and gets a takedown to side mount. He works an Americana and goes to half guard, where he punches. Cadima holds tightly as the round ends.

Round 2: Cadima hits a leg kick. Sherman responds with a few right hands before getting a takedown to mount. He gets space and pounds before the referee ends the fight.

Winner by TKO at :43 of round 2 and still WFL Super Heavyweight Champion: Sherman Pendergarst

18. 8-Man Tournament: Finals. Doug Brown (Fight Zone) vs. Joe Lauzon (Team Aggression)

Round 1: They touch gloves and circle. Doug tries a head kick, but misses. Joe jabs and gets a double leg, picking Brown up and putting him in side mount before going to full mount. Lauzon pounds to the body as Brown holds tightly. When J-Lau gets space, he pounds and locks in an arm bar. Brown taps.

Winner by submission (arm bar) and WFL 8-Man Tournament Champion: Joe Lauzon
